Google Might Have 3G Nexus 7 Ready in a Few Weeks :
Google Nexus 7 |
A 3G-enabled version of the Google Nexus 7 tablet may be out in the market just a few days from now, according to a report from tech site MoDaCo.
The specifications of the Nexus 7 3G will reportedly be the same as the original Nexus 7, save for the 3G support. The device will have the same Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean platform and 7-inch LCD display with front-facing camera for video conferencing, wireless radio for Internet access would be included in the parts. MoDaCo didn’t mention whether a version supporting 4G LTE would eventually be available – this may be a problem for U.S. consumers if such a version would eventually be launched, as 4G LTE isn’t known to mesh with quad-core processing power. According to MoDaCo, the device will be released in the fourth quarter of 2012 – as such, it will be competing with tablets such as the unannounced Apple iPad mini and Amazon’s more affordable new-generation Kindle Fire variants. The new Kindle Fire tablets were praised for coming with HD display capabilities but were scored by many for not including Google Maps and most of all, for the advertisements that appear on the devices’ lock screens. Per usual, Amazon heavily customized the Kindle tablets’ Android operating system and did not include Google Play among the apps.
This 3G-enabled tablet, if the rumor is accurate, could be Google’s answer to the rumored iPad mini, a 7.85-inch tablet that Apple may be launching in September or October. The Nexus 7 is now considered the world’s best-selling smaller tablet, having taken that honor from the Kindle Fire when it was released just this July. However, with Apple and Amazon about to make their moves, Google may have its work cut out, thus the possibility of a 3G version of the Nexus 7.
Nexus 7 |
Neither Google nor Nexus 7 manufacturer Asus have confirmed how many tablet units have been shipped or sold thus far, but a recent market analysis has estimated that number at 8 million by the end of 2012. Computerworld also predicted third-quarter 2012 sales of the Nexus 7 to come out at 2.9 million. That’s a higher number than the original Kindle Fire’s sales in its first quarter after release. If these forecasts would turn out to be true, then the Nexus 7 would officially become the world’s best-selling Android-powered tablet.
